The Songwriters Association of Canada enthusiastically endorses the white paper ‘The Remuneration of Music Creators for the Use of Their Works by Generative AI.’ We believe it offers a compelling, viable, and promising path forward in the ongoing effort to ensure fair compensation for music creators in this new era of generative artificial intelligence.
Music creators have always been at the forefront of technological innovation. However, when technology relies on copyrighted musical works to function, a strong legislative framework is essential to ensure fair remuneration.
Developed by Professor Daniel J. Gervais of Vanderbilt Law School and produced by CIAM and FTMI, the paper provides a detailed legal analysis of the benefits of a new right of remuneration for Gen AI. It promises to support the sustainability of human authorship of creative works and to solve the legal issues surrounding this exciting new technology.

“Gen AI platforms must be transparent and keep track of their use of human created works. A new right of remuneration, vested in flesh and blood music creators, would be a major step towards an ethical, sustainable and fair use of this revolutionary technology.”
