After a well-known singer demanded a portion of the income songwriter Emily Warren would earn from writing a song in exchange for recording it, Warren got angry and stood her ground. This resulted in an open letter from songwriters dubbed the Pact.
The document stated that the signees (including Justin Tranter and Ross Golan) “will not give publishing or songwriting credit to anyone who did not create” or in any way modify the song. The letter was a leverage call for writers in an industry where labels and artists make more money than songwriters from streaming and selling merch.
