Songwriters Association of Canada (S.A.C.) submitted comments to the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board in the Phonorecords V proceeding regarding proposed mechanical royalty rates for songwriters and composers.

S.A.C. expressed support for the concerns raised by independent music creators, including Music Creators North America (MCNA) and the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA), that the proposed settlement may not adequately preserve the real value of mechanical royalties over time.
The submission emphasized the importance of fair, transparent, and inflation-responsive royalty rates that protect creators’ purchasing power and provide sustainable compensation, as well as the need for independent music creators to be meaningfully included in future negotiations and settlements.

Although S.A.C. is not a participant in the proceeding, it highlighted the direct importance of U.S. mechanical royalty rates to Canadian songwriters whose works are widely reproduced and distributed in the U.S. market.
