World’s Music Creators Make a Case for Agency at the CIAM General Assembly

S.A.C. recently returned from Montreal, where members of the board and staff attended the CIAM General Assembly. Representatives of creator groups from around the world came together for two days of insightful meetings and keynote discussions on critical issues affecting music creators globally such as the need for creator agency, and the challenges and opportunities presented by generative artificial intelligence.

President Arun Chaturvedi delivered opening remarks, while directors Andrea England, Greg Johnston and SATE engaged in panel discussions on a diverse range of topics. S.A.C. treasurer Martine Groulx presented the 2024 Fair Trade Music International Awards, honouring songwriter, composer and inaugural Minister of Culture for Argentina Teresa Parodi and longtime creators’ rights advocate Satoshi Watanabe for their outstanding contributions to the cause of fair remuneration for music creators.

Alongside the General Assembly, S.A.C. was proud to sponsor the second annual CIAM International Women’s Writing Camp, where fifteen women songwriters and producers from across the globe collaborated for three days at the renowned Planet Studios in Montreal. Special thanks to S.A.C. operations manager Natalie Bogdanovic for her assistance and diligent work in coordinating the camp, alongside partners SOCAN, Music Publishers Canada and CIAM.

And we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to S.A.C. President Emeritus and outgoing CIAM President Eddie Schwartz for his successful and inspirational two-term mandate as leader of CIAM.
