The Jesus Song

He knew the danger
Of talking too quickly of love
Yet he’d tell a stranger
The stranger had hated enough

He tried to find the best in mankind
Even when we played rough
Maybe that’s why we spilled his blood on a hill
And sent him home on the wings of a dove

By the sweat on his brow
By the dust in his mouth
By the way that he cried out loud
I know he cried for us
I know he cried for us

Born in a manger
A rabbi who worked with his hands
He was the changer
Who gave us all a chance

But when we heard his beautiful word
Some of us said that’s too tough
Maybe that’s why we spilled his blood on a hill
And sent him home on the wings of a dove

By the sun in his eyes
By the flies on his skin
By the way that he died for us
I know he lives within
I know he lives within

Born in Montreal in 1946. Taught guitar by Leonard Cohen at age 13. Left home age 16 and worked as logger, tobacco picker, apprentice bedspread cutter and auto mechanic until early 20s. Played at various clubs from Montreal to Vancouver, e.g., The New Penelope and The Bunkhouse. Went to Concordia University for B.A. and Uof T for M.A. in Eng. Lit. Worked my way up in book publishing industry for a decade, becoming president of my own company. Was briefly VP of a bank, then quit to become high school English teacher (sounds crazy but I loved it). Was legally blind for a couple of years but got my sight back. Author of published novel (Some Kind of Hero), a collection of short stories (Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear) and a book of poems (When the Rapture Comes). My debut CD was Heartbeat of Time (2008), my second CD was 2 The Max (2012) and my third CD, It's A Mystery To Me, was released in 2014.
